Bridgeport Students Awarded Housatonic Community College Scholarships

May 3, 2007

BRIDGEPORT — The first two recipients of the Koskoff-Bieder Scholarship Fund at Housatonic Community College were announced today.

Rasheme Baskin, 20, of Bridgeport and JayRon Vines, 19, also of Bridgeport, were awarded the first two scholarships since the law firm of Koskoff, Koskoff & Bieder donated $20,000 to establish a scholarship fund for Housatonic Community College students.

The Koskoff-Bieder Scholarship Fund was established to specifically assist students who also hold part-time employment. Both the scholarship recipients are employed at Bridgeport law firms – Baskin at Koskoff, Koskoff & Bieder and Vines at Cohen & Wolf.

Baskin, the youngest of three children, is a graduate of Bridgeport’s Central High School. He said he is pursuing a general liberal arts education and has not settled on a major.

Vines, who graduated from high school in North Carolina, is the middle of three children. He lives in Bridgeport with his family and is studying business administration with a focus on management.

Anita Gliniecki, President of Housatonic Community College, noted how critical scholarships are to the success of students. “Students, who are able to focus on their classes instead of increasing their work hours to meet expenses, are most likely to succeed in courses and attain their degrees.”

The Koskoff-Bieder Scholarship was established as part of the law firm’s continued effort to support the Greater Bridgeport area. Previously, the firm joined with other Bridgeport-based law firms and businesses to create Attorneys and Businesses For A Better Connecticut which provides part-time employment to young adults residing in Bridgeport and who would not otherwise have the opportunity to work in white-collar environments.

The Housatonic Community College Foundation Scholarship Fund administers the Koskoff-Bieder scholarship fund.
